October Programs Celebrate the Hudson Valley
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Garrison, New York – September 2018) – Boscobel House and Gardens proudly presents its October roster of programs, all of which center around its mission of engaging diverse audiences in the Hudson Valley’s ongoing, dynamic exchange between design, history, and nature.
“There is no better place to experience autumn in the Hudson Valley than at Boscobel,” says Director of Visitor Engagement Ed Glisson. “Boscobel’s iconic Historic House Museum is always on target for exceptional engagements that link our lives today with our historic past.”
This October, Boscobel takes those connections to another level.
HERITAGE APPLEFEST
Celebrate Hudson Valley harvests at Boscobel’s Heritage Applefest. Featuring live music, sweet and hard cider sampling, and press-your-own cider as well as family games and activities. In addition to sweet and hard cider, apple cider doughnuts, apple cider butter, and apple cider syrup will be available for purchase from local vendors.
The Historic House Museum will also be open for visitors to explore at their own pace and direction with expert guides stationed to offer insight and information.
At the time of Boscobel’s construction in the early 19th-century, the apple was America’s favorite fruit. Boscobel’s Apple Orchard still features some of those varieties and many newer ones, all of which are prized today. Let’s toast in their honor!

SPECIAL EXHIBITION
CAMPAIGN FURNITURE: THE MARCH OF PORTABLE DESIGN
Boscobel House and Gardens’ 2018 exhibition features two dozen 18th- and 19th- century examples that are as functional as they are elegant. Collapsible chairs, tables, beds, and more were once considered essential equipment for military officers, Hudson River School artists, and well-heeled tourists. These ingeniously designed objects document the desire for the comforts of home, even when out on the road.
Campaign Furniture was inspired by Boscobel’s renowned collection of New York furniture, the rich military and artistic history of the Hudson River Valley, and the tens of thousands of picnickers who bring their own stylish equipment to Boscobel every summer.

PANEL DISCUSSION: THE ENDURING APPEAL OF CAMPAIGN FURNITURE
What’s to love about “campaign furniture”? Enjoy a private peek in the Gallery and throughout the Historic House Museum, then hear from experts about why these 18th- and 19th-century forms are not only collectible antiques, they are inspiring new generations of urban dwellers, designers, and mass-market retailers from Pottery Barn to Target. Reception to follow.

WOODWORKING DEMONSTRATION DAY
Interact with Hudson Valley artist Mike Leggett as he demonstrates the artistry, skills, and secrets of expert woodworking before power tools. This program is organized in conjunction with Boscobel’s exhibition Campaign Furniture: The March of Portable Design, on view through November 4 and is made possible, in part, through the Putnam Arts Council’s Arts Link Grant Program, with public funds provided through the NY State Council on the Arts with support from Governor Andrew Cuomo and the NY State Legislature.

TALK: TRAVELS, TOOLS, AND TECHNIQUES OF 19th-CENTURY ARTIST EXPEDITIONS
Artist/historian James Lancel McElhinney is an expert on period practices of drawing and painting on the move. Based on decades of research, McElhinney will discuss and illustrate the tools and techniques used by expeditionary artists like William Guy Wall, Jacques-Gerard Milbert, and West Point-trained military explorers like Seth Eastman and James Abert. In this talk, co-sponsored with the Garrison Art Center, McElhinney unpacks the mobile practice of 19th-century journal-art.
McElhinney’s presentation is in conjunction with Boscobel’s exhibition, Campaign Furniture: The March of Portable Design, which includes his own limited edition print series, Hudson Highlands Suite Volume One: North River.

SYMPOSIUM
CONTINUED TRADITIONS: PAINTING AND SCULPTURE IN THE HUDSON RIVER VALLEY
Foremost curators from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian, and more will share insights into the history of art making in the Hudson River Valley. This symposium places into context Boscobel’s new Hudson River School Artists Garden. The installation, funded by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, features ten sculptures by Greg Wyatt honoring 19th-painters who celebrated nature.

LANDSCAPE AND LANDMARKS TOURS
Outdoor Landscape and Landmarks tours share stories about Boscobel’s extraordinary site overlooking the Hudson River, Constitution Marsh, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Enjoy the beauty of Boscobel while learning about the site’s historic architecture, natural history, earliest inhabitants, and the key importance that it held for General George Washington and Benedict Arnold, Hudson River School artists, and 20th-century environmentalists. Children are always welcome.

RHYME TIME BY THE HUDSON
Joyful learning through nursery rhymes, songs, parachute play, and storytelling will spark your little one’s curiosity and imagination. Museum Educator Lisa DiMarzo leads this interactive program designed for children ages 1 through 4 with their caregivers. Meet up with little friends or make new friends here at Boscobel!
