Try Oyster Ice Cream at Boscobel

June 11th, 2018

Plus Live Music, Open House Tours, and 19th-Century Lawn Games

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Garrison, NY – June 2018) – Just two years into the construction of Boscobel, ice cream was served at the White House for the very first time. Back in 1806, popular flavors included apricot, parmesan, and oyster.

On Saturday, June 30 (raindate July 1), Boscobel will carry on this tradition by hosting its first-ever Ice Cream Social on the Great Lawn. Enjoy one of the most beautiful views in the Hudson River Valley while celebrating this classic sweet treat in flavors both familiar and unusual.

Jane’s Ice Cream will provide the timeless flavors of vanilla and chocolate, as well as some options with uncommon ingredients. Guests will also have the opportunity to taste test Ice Creamed Oyster, a delicacy that was popular at functions hosted by presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, along with First Lady Dolley Madison.

In addition to ice cream, from 1:00-3:00pm The New Hudson Saxophone Quartet will perform live music from the 19th-century. Family-friendly, period lawn games will be available to enjoy throughout the event.

The Historic House Museum will be open for guests to explore at their own pace and direction with expert guides stationed to offer insight and information.

“We’ve packed Boscobel’s 2018 season with new and favorite events that connect families to our historic house’s original era,” says Executive Director Jennifer Carlquist, “The Ice Cream Social is a perfect chance to enjoy Boscobel’s house and grounds, great music, and the sweeter side of history.”
